EO in 25 objects No.8 : Wilkin & Sons – Tiptree

Royal warranted producer of jams, marmalades and preserves Wilkin & Sons has been trading for 135 years.  In 1905 it became one of the first companies to offer its employees a minimum pension and company housing scheme, which still exists to this day.  The Company currently has 548 employees and is listed amongst the top 50 employee owned companies in the UK.

57% Employee owned, a share ownership scheme was started in 1985 and shares were transferred to a trust for the employees, which currently holds over half the issued share capital.  The Tiptree farm in Essex covers some 850 acres, home not only to the fruits that go in to the jams and preserves, but to honey bees, native hedging and all the wildlife it attracts. In recent years, they have reduced their use of chemicals by 80% and hit a stringent recycling target of 90%.  Good to know your jam habit is good for the environment too!
