The only employee-owned newspaper in the UK, the West Highland Free Press (WHFP) has maintained its independence and enjoyed stability since making the transition to employee ownership in 2009. Whilst many papers were closing or downsizing, WHFP recognized their value to their local community and set about creating a stable base for the paper with dedicated staff putting out the best edition possible each week. WHFP now boasts the best staff retention rate across the UK newspaper industry.
‘The sense of togetherness employee ownership brings has been invaluable to the business. We’ve done something unique in the newspaper industry and we’ve proved employee-ownership is not only scalable to smaller businesses, but a clear way forward for delivering local news.’
